Originally purchased from the 1999 Guernsey’s Elvis Presley Enterprises (EPE) auction held at the Las Vegas MGM Grand Hotel. The description can be found on page 122/C111 of the catalog book (please see enclosure).
This 22 x 28 inch (appx.) blue color portrait of Elvis Presley was commissioned by Colonel Parker.
Ms. Sibley, the artist, used the June 9th, 1972 New York Press Conference as her focal point and added a hand held microphone to give the illusion of a concert setting.
Ms. Sibley presented 50 of these portraits for review to Colonel Parker in August of 1972 at the Las Vegas Hilton during Elvis’ engagement. As you see by the enclosed letter on Las Vegas Hilton stationery it states: “Received of All Star Shows/Colonel Parker fifty (50) blue Elvis portraits to be framed.” Signed and dated 8/5/72. In a hand written notation is the same memo as above and signed once again.
The research I conducted found that Colonel Parker was intending to offer these as gifts (reason he intended to have them framed) to a selected number of people but it never materialized. What is interesting is that he used this portrait (as well as 2 others by Ms. Sibley) for the 1977 tour as well as the tour book that Boxcar/Factors sold in 1978 in a gold folio box.
These were part of the Colonel Parker collection that he sold to EPE back in 1999.
You have purchased an original portrait from Colonel Parker’s personal collection that was from his office in Madison, TN. Only 50 of these were printed and given to Col. Parker.
